Levomefolate Calcium (5-MTHF), a naturally occurring salt-methyl derivative of folate, is the most biologically active and functional form of folate and is more readily absorbed than folate.

L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (along with vitamin B12) functions as a methyl donor in a range of metabolic and neurological processes, making it critical to many metabolic pathways in the body. L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate plays a vital role in methylation. It converts homocysteine into methionine, produces 5-hydroxytryptamine and melatonin, and indirectly participates in DNA synthesis.
L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate is the strongest form of dietary folate. It is the only naturally occurring form in our blood circulation and is therefore the form of folate that is normally transported to peripheral tissues for cellular metabolism. Many people don’t know that folic acid is a synthetic form of the vitamin, which means it’s only found in fortified foods and supplements. It is the most severely oxidized form of folic acid and does not have the coenzyme activity required by the body. Therefore, it must be reduced and methylated to be metabolically active in the body. Within the cell, folate is reduced to the metabolically active “tetrahydrofolate” form.
