Can echinacea really fight colds and the flu?

Echinacea is a wildflower of the composite family native to America.  Echinacea has been used as a medicinal plant in North America for hundreds of years.  Echinacea was first used for medical purposes by North American Indians in the 18th century and quickly spread across the United States.
